Good For You Friday: Mini Healthy Grocery Haul

One of my favourite things in this world, is to have a fridge/cupboard full of healthy/yummy food! I love the feeling after you have done a big shop and your house is jam packed full of foodie may sound bit lame but to me that's heaven!

Lately I have been feeling bit off. I recently had a blood test which told me my iron levels are so low I'm anaemic...not a surprise considering I am a vegetarian but I do try to have as much iron as I can in my meals. But to me it's a sign I need to re-jig my diet.

It's tough over Easter time to chose healthy snacks over the amazing chocolate treats you have waving at you whenever you open your cupboard. I know I have found it tough. I have a big sweet tooth, so I am a sucker for anything delicious and not nutritious. I try, i really do...but sometimes I cave...and by sometimes I mean a lot. So I decided that considering I was feeling so flat and non-irony I would go out and find some healthy food to get me back to tip top shape. I could seriously spend all my money in healthy food shops but there are only so many varieties of tea and almond milk one person can buy at one time.

So I went along and bought some yummy things and thought I would share some of my purchases with you!

Yogi Tea: I am a massive tea fan! I particularly love Peppermint tea and the "Yogi Purely Peppermint" tea is by far the BEST I've ever had! It's a big call but I feel like it's deserving! I love this tea so much! I first tried it when I was over in America and have been addicted ever since. I have heard that one tea bag is enough to do two cups of tea, so it has quite a strong taste. I defiantly recommend trying this one out for all you tea lovers. I got the "Yogi Throat Comfort" as a present for Paddy. He is an actor and does a lot of voice overs and therefore needs to look after that beautiful voice of his. So I thought I'd get him to try this one out and see if it does the trick.

Protein bars: I am one of those people who if I become angry...I become HANGRY! I am not the nicest person when my stomach is grumbling and I will be the first one to admit it. Therefore in order to try and maintain world peace I carry bars around in my bag. I have recently joined up to a gym so I have also been enjoying protein bars before or after a work out, so I was looking for some healthy protein snacks I could try out. I found "The Cave Foods" protein bars in Chocolate and Vanilla, "Cliff Bar" in White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, "Quest Bar" in Coconut Cashew, "Lara Bar" in Coconut cream pie and the "Coconut Magic" raw energy bar. You can probably tell I love me some coconut. The thing I love about these bars is they are really low in sugars, far and have no nasties that you will find in other protein bars. They are basically just made up of healthy ingredients that will benefit your body. Now I have only tried the "Lara bar" which I had before my work out today and it was really yummy and very filling! I'll update you on how I feel about the others as I go.

Chocolate treats: Like I said before, I am trying to battle my sweet tooth and cut down on the sugar. It is very hard for me as I feel I have a separate compartment in my stomach, that not matter how full I may be from dinner, I could inhale a block of chocolate in two minutes flat. So I am going to TRY my hardest to cut down, but I figure everyone deserves the right to indulge and so if I have to have bit of chocolate in the night as a treat, why not have a healthier alternative. I have seen the "Alter Eco" chocolate a lot on youtube and have only heard good things so I grabbed two blocks, the Dark Coconut Toffee (again with the coconut) and the Dark Salted Brown Butter. I'm so excited to try these out. Just the name makes my mouth water. I also grabbed a block of the "Pana Chocolate" Nuts raw chocolate. I love this brand of chocolate. I know raw chocolate is very much to taste, Paddy HATES it where as I love it. The nuts flavour would have to be my favourite but pretty much anything they do is amazing.

Gluten Free Pasta: I am a really pasta lover and I have been really enjoying gluten free pasta more and more because I find that once you finish your meal you don't have that full, achy belly that you can sometimes get from normal pasta. It just tastes bit cleaner to me and I really notice the difference when I have normal versus gluten free. I saw the Black bean spaghetti online and thought it looked really interesting so I got a bag of that to give it a try. The owner of the health store I was in recommended the Amaranth and Rice penne so I had to go with his suggestion. I want to make my own pesto so I though the penne would be great along side that!

Organic Peanut Butter and Organic Pink Lady Apples: I am definitely a snacked when I'm bored. So I figure if I only have healthy snack options in my house then it's not as bad...right?...I love apple and peanut butter together! Seriously addictive! So I grabbed a jar of the "Ambrosia" organic peanut butter. It has no added salt, sugar or preservatives and tastes a lot cleaner and less "gluggy" than a lot of the other peanut butters out there. My favourite apples are the Pink Lady apples as I find they are nice and sweet, organic apples always tastes better so make sure to look out for them in your fruit shops!

Organic Spelt Bread: I don't really eat a lot of bread, but when I do I like to eat the wholegrain breads or if possible the gluten free options. I have never tried spelt bread before but I have heard it's really good for you as it is an ancient super food grain, so I thought I would give this a whirl. I had some in my sandwich today and it was super nice! It tastes quite doughy and kind of reminded me of sourdough bread, but i really enjoyed it!

Protein Powder: Like I said before, Paddy and I have recently joined up to a gym so we have been on the hunt for a good protein powder. We don't want to get the normal commercial protein powders as they are usually jam packed with sugar and a lot of preservatives which your body doesn't need. So we have been looking for a nice, healthy protein. We have tried one brand before which tastes like chalk and flour mushed together...not the nicest thing in the I thought I would grab the "Sun Warrior" Classic Raw Vegan Protein in Vanilla. I have never tried this before but it is soy free, dairy free, gluten free and nasty free. So I can't go wrong really? I'll let you know if it's chalk tasting free as well!

Green St Juice Co: I love a cold pressed juice! They really are the best things ever, particularly if you are feel bit on the "meh" side. I saw that this juice bar had opened up and was conveniently across the street from the health food shop I was in, so I decided to grab a couple of bottle and get some goodness into me! I got their signature juice, the Green St Classic, which is full of loads of green veggies and fruits! I also got the West Village which is a almond milk based juice which sounds delicious! I can't wait to give these a go!

So that is my healthy haul for this week! I can't wait to munch on all these yummy treats and look after my body at the same time!
