Soul Sunday: My Reiki Experience

I wouldn't call myself a complete hippy nor do I live a completely alternative lifestyle, but I am open to trying things which may be considered "different". I love to meditate, I try and buy as many organic products as I can and I also believe there are ghosts lurking around (living in a haunted house really help cement my views on that one). One thing I HAVE been sceptical on is Reiki. I've heard a lot about it from people, I know my Dad had a really powerful experience with it but I have always been bit "mehhh". I just didn't really understand it.

I recently went through a week (maybe two weeks according to my partner) where I was "Negative Nancy". Everything was annoying, everything was wrong, I cried pretty much everyday for god only knows what reason.  I suffer from anxiety and I felt as though my brain was going to explode. I couldn't hear myself think because I was so busy thinking about EVERYTHING, "Are they mad at me?", "Am I happy with the way I look", "Am I happy with my job?", "Why is there so much animal fur in my house when I vacuumed yesterday". Literally Everything.
Not only that but I felt as though there was drama after drama surrounding us. I am a firm believer in positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative so I'm sure I had wrapped myself in a negative tornado. I felt as though the life was literally draining out of me.

My friend and I had planned to go on a early morning walk down the beach in which I forced myself to get out of bed at 5am because I knew it could only help me. As we walked I talked to her about how I was feeling and she began to tell me that she too had recently gone on the same emotional roller coaster I was currently riding. She told me in a fit of desperation she had gone to an amazing lady who performed a Reiki healing on her and she swore when she stood up from the table she felt like a completely new person. Like I said before I was always little bit sceptical of Reiki. It's uncharted territory. But the way she was talking about it and how much it helped, I was at the point where I was fed up and willing to try anything.

I am a natural procrastinator. I have actually mastered the technique of putting something off for a life time. But after my walk I sat in my car and thought about how I was feeling, how sad and frustrated I felt. So I thought stuff it. I'm going to call her and see her today before I could convince myself otherwise. I'm so glad I did because it turned out to be one of the most positive experiences of my life.

Before I go into my Reiki experience, I'll give you little background on it for those who are going Reiki "huuuhhh??". Reiki is a Japanese technique which aids in stress reduction, relaxation and promotes healing. The word Reiki is broken up into two Japanese words: Rei - "Higher power" and Ki- "Life force energy". So essentially it is "spiritually guided life force energy". This healing is based on the theory that a life force energy flows through us causing us to be alive. If our energy is low we feel stressed, sick, depressed etc. If our energy is high we feel positive, awake, energised etc. By laying their hands over someone, a technique called "hands on healing", it is believed that a Reiki healer transfers positive energy through the palms which helps one with self healing and restoring relaxation and a sense of peace. So that, in a small nutshell is the basic idea of Reiki.

Now my experience...

I went to a small shop in the heart of St Kilda called "The Yellow Room", hidden away down a little street. To be honest I was feeling alittle bit apprehensive at this point but it was too late to turn back. As soon as I walked through the door I was met by Dee, the owner of "The Yellow Room" and her husband who was clearing the space of any negative ju ju which may be floating around. As soon as she opened her mouth Dee was like a big ray of positive sunshine. Her happiness and relaxed nature is infectious and I immediately loved her. She took me through to her healing room and we had a big chat about how I was feeling and what I wanted from her today. My friend had told me she felt as though Dee could read her mind because she just "got her" and I totally agree. Everything I was trying to explain Dee got straight away, she was spot on with her assessment of where I was at and could sense my chaotic brain churning away at a million miles an hour.

She began the Reiki healing with a massage (an AMAZING massage FYI) and I could feel myself already starting to slow down. She uses a mixture of crystals, essential oils and I'm assuming some kind of magical powers as I was feeling pretty damn good by this point. The room was the perfect temperature, the music sends you off to into a nice peaceful trance and whatever Dee was doing around me (I had my eyes closed so I can't really inform you to much of what was happening at that point) was literally sucking the negative, frustrated and draining energy from my body. Once the healing was over Dee instructed me to take my time getting up and she would meet me out the front. Again my friend was spot on, I groggily slid off the table and as soon as my feet hit the ground, it was like the sun came out and the birds started chirping. I felt amazing!  Amazing isn't even a strong enough word. I felt as though everything I was worrying about suddenly came into perspective and I knew it was all stupid, I knew none of it really mattered. I could hear myself think again.  As I walked out the front it was though a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I gave Dee a hug straight away. I think I thanked her a good 47 times.

Now I know that some people may think it was the effect of having a good massage, or maybe it was all in my head, but I swear whatever Reiki magic Dee did on my that day changed me. It was truly such a positive and I'm going to go as far as saying a life changing experience. If you haven't tried it, do it! Coming from a sceptic, it really did convince me! If you are in Melbourne I really recommend you go and see the amazing Dee at "The Yellow Room"!

If you do try Reiki out, please let me know your experience! I'd love to hear other peoples opinion!

I hope you all enjoyed my Reiki encounter and I'll see you all soon!!
