Spring into your day Smoothie!

Now that the weather is warming up, the sky is abit brighter, the sun is getting warmer I can feel myself slipping out of the winter blues. As much as I do like Winter, I am a Summer girl at heart. I usually find myself crawling into hibernation like a bear in Winter and the motivation to exercise and eat healthy dwindles. But now that Spring has sprung that craving for healthy living is back in full force.

One of my favourite ways to start the day is to make a healthy smoothie. Not only are they yummy and filling, but it's a quick and easy way to give your body a big dose of super healthy nutrients that will leave you feeling amazing! I went through a period where I was feeling pretty average. I woke up everyday feeling lethargic, really dizzy and generally pretty crap (excuse the french but it describes my feelings perfectly). I have been a vegetarian for nearly 3 years and have already struggled with my iron levels so I thought that this must be a main contributor to my overall "feeling crapiness". I tried iron supplements but they seem to only have a short lived effect. So I decided to do alittle research and discovered the world of "Super Foods".

To summarise nice and quickly (don't want to start ranting my second post in) a "Super Food" is defined as a nutrient rich food which is beneficial for health and well being. "Super Foods" are everywhere. Even things that you would eat day to day are secret super food designed to make you feel amazing! So I picked a few of my favourite ones, all as nutrient packed as the next and created a smoothie that literally puts the ZING back into my amazingly amazing day. Only days after make these smoothies I felt instantly better, I had loads more energy, felt fuller for longer and the dizziness and nauseous completely disappeared. So rather than keep my secret smoothie powers to myself I thought I'd share it with you guys to help you all kick start your way into spring.

Ingredients:

Coconut Milk

I am a MASSIVE coconut fan. Whether it be Coconut water, flakes, cream, oil or just the smell. So naturally coconut milk is a big must have for my smoothie. Obviously it's dairy free, so for those vegans or dairy intolerant people out there grab yourself some quick smart!  It tastes super delicious and creamy and is absolutely jam packed full of vitamins C, E, B1, B3, B5 and B6. Not only that but it is a great source of Iron, magnesium and calcium.

Strawberries

I have always been a big strawberry fan. They are a great treat for breakfast, snacks throughout the day and also dipped in chocolate (I do think anything with chocolate is amazing though).  This healthy treat is a great way to boost your immunity as it is high in Vitamin C. Not only this but they are an antioxidant, an awesome preventative for cataracts in your eyes and are known to help keep your skin looking younger for longer.

Banana

Not only are bananas delicious but they are one crazy multi-tasking fruit. Bananas are known as the "happy mood"fruit  as they have high levels of tryptophan which converts to serotonin thereby ringing the happy bells in your brain. Bananas are also great lowering blood pressure and looking after your kidney and liver.

Greek Yoghurt

Although I do love vanilla yoghurt, the sugar levels are alittle too much to be having all the time. So for this smoothie I find plain Greek yoghurt is a little healthier but is still great for thickening up the smoothie and making it nice and creamy. Yoghurt is also an awesome probiotic to keep that good bacteria in your body and a great source of calcium for your bones.

Chia Seeds

For something so small, these tiny seeds are healthy power houses. They are full of Omega 3 fatty acids  for some serious brain power, they are a great source of fibre for your diet, and they are a awesome source of protein for all those Vegetarians out there.

                   Maca Powder

This powder is literally a saving grace for all us Vegetarians out there. The two main things lacking in a Vegetarian diet is iron and B12. Maca powder is jam packed with both of them. Not only that but its a great source of zinc, magnesium and calcium. Serious super powers there!

                      Hemp Seeds

No, I'm not talking about marijuana - I just had to say that! These little hippy seeds are a great form of protein and are full of all the good fats you need for a healthy diet. They are also great for lowering blood pressure and improve digestion!

Raw Honey

Lucky last. I like to mix some honey in to add some extra sweetness to the smoothie. Not only is honey yummmmmmy it has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties so why not add it in for alittle extra goodness?

So that's my ingredients! I don't really have a specific amount of each item I put in, I think its better to judge that yourself depending on what you like in a smoothie. So if you like your smoothies extra fruity add abit more strawberries, like it thicker and creamier then go crazy with the Greek yogurt. With all the super additives like chia seeds, maca powder and hemp seeds, a table spoon of each is enough to get all that goodness into you.

If you feel inspired to make this yummy smoothie let me know how you go! I try to make this every day and I really notice the difference on the days where I miss out! So if I can pass this amazingness on to you and make even one more person feel great then that's a great result! If anyone has any other great smoothie suggestions please feel free to let me know as my blender would love some new ingredients to whirl around!
